The little mixed breed puppy Guppy was just a few days old when he came to Bryson Veterinary Clinic.
The Shih Tzu and Beagle mix suffered a terrible fate – he was rejected by his mother immediately after birth!
But that was not all. The poor puppy was unfortunately born with a leg deformity.
They believed he could make it
The people who brought Guppy to the clinic had little hope that the baby dog would pull through.
But the vets knew as soon as they saw Guppy that she was a real survivor!
The puppy weighed just four grams and was therefore extremely fragile!
As the vets firmly believed that the little puppy would make it, they developed a plan to save Guppy’s life.
The plan was quickly thrown overboard
At first, the staff decided to take turns bottle-feeding the puppy overnight in their home.
But then everything turned out quite differently than planned..
On the very first night, her fosterer decided that Guppy could live with her from now on – and that she would never give him up again.
She immediately sensed that the puppy had found a new home with her, as he could grow up safely and securely here.
Her daughter was also more than thrilled with the sweet guppy.
„When my mother brought her home, I immediately fell in love with her“,
jess Lane later recounts.
Examination at the vet
The little puppy grew up slowly but happily in his new family.
At around three months old, Guppy was finally big enough to be x-rayed – this meant that her deformed leg could now be examined in detail.
The result: Guppy’s leg was missing a shoulder joint and several other bones.
Fortunately, this diagnosis was not a cause for concern – as long as the puppy has no problems walking, everything can stay as it is.
„We noticed that she never looked at us when we called her name“
Over the next few weeks, Guppy settled in more and more with her new family – she also got on wonderfully with her sister Libby, also an adopted dog.
Libby was like a kind of surrogate mother for the puppy – she groomed and loved the little one as if she were her own baby!
When Guppy was about four months old, Jess noticed that the little dog showed no reaction to loud noises. She simply ignored them.
When the family called her name, she didn’t react at all. On the other hand, she was always downright terrified when she woke up, which nobody could explain.
Happy despite restrictions
At the vet’s it turned out that the little puppy was deaf and therefore did not react to any sounds.
But despite this limitation, Guppy is a happy dog who is living a happy life with her new family.
She grew and thrived from day to day – and learned to live with her handicaps.
Although she initially had difficulty climbing up the steps to the veranda, she has now acquired a technique for jumping in such a way that she doesn’t get stuck on the steps.
Incredible transformation
It’s not just physically that everything has changed for the better for Guppy – her personality has also developed a lot since then.
Guppy now plays a lot more with all the other animals in the house. But she has also discovered a new favorite pastime: digging!
Although her family initially thought that she would have problems with her impaired paw, they were proven wrong.
When she’s not busy digging, she loves to chew on her favorite toys and cuddly blankets.
„I can’t imagine life without her“
Guppy’s days are filled with lots of variety and an incredible amount of love from her family.
Guppy is now eight months old and weighs just over six kilograms.
Lane is so incredibly happy to have taken Guppy in back then. A life without her? No longer possible!
