The two dogs sleeping on a mattress in front of the Istikbal Mobile furniture store in Istanbul are by no means part of the store’s inventory.
Nevertheless, they are a familiar sight for people in the neighborhood.
This is how the two strays came to have an unusual place to sleep.
A heart for animals
Dr. Cem Baykal passes this furniture store every day on his way to work.
And almost every day for the past six years, he has seen a golden and a gray dog lying on a mattress there.
The two dogs, who seem to have known each other all their lives, are just as much a part of life in this Istanbul neighborhood as Cem and the owner of the furniture store.
And the latter does not hide his affection for the four-legged friends.
He not only sells things like sleeping facilities and other furniture to the human residents, but also provides the animals with cozy places to sleep.
Instead of hiding his efforts or trying to chase the strays away, he shows his big heart quite publicly and places the mattress right in front of the store window.
Strays have a home here
But it’s not just the owner of the store who looks after the stray animals. Other residents also make sure that the dogs always have food and water available.
The two sleepers in particular are already well known in the affluent neighborhood and gratefully accept the food.
But the „Istikbal Mobile“ furniture store alone provides the dogs with a comfortable place to sleep.
It is incredibly commendable that people openly care for the animals and treat them as fully-fledged members of everyday life.
Unfortunately, this is still not a matter of course!
In many cities around the world, street animals lead a sad existence and are lucky to get hold of scraps of food from the garbage or a simple cardboard box as a bed.
