Somewhere in the Australian state of South Australia, the owners of a large property are walking their land. Suddenly they notice something strange.
There, a few meters in front of them, spikes are sticking out of the ground. What could it be? Interested, the people come closer and that’s great luck.
Hopelessly caught in the net
The spines belong to an echidna. The echidna is closely related to the platypus.
Like the platypus, it is a rare egg-laying mammal. However, this particular echidna really doesn’t feel like laying eggs at the moment.
It has become hopelessly entangled in a net and urgently needs help.
Animal rescuers arrive quickly
The owners of the property have a heart for animals and want to help.
However, as they are not experts and don’t want to do anything wrong, they call the organization Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue.
They specialize in helping echidnas. It doesn’t take long for two expert employees, Mary and Dave Williams, to arrive on site.
The echidna remains completely calm during the rescue operation and is soon rid of the hideous net.
Netty
The animal is now taken to the Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue rehabilitation center for a medical examination.
As it turns out, it is a lady echidna, and because she was caught in a net, she is now nicknamed Netty.
Back to freedom
The bad news: Netty has no broken bones or similar injuries.
However, she is completely exhausted and too weak to return to freedom straight away. The good news: she doesn’t have to.
Netty is given all the time she needs to fully recover.
Staff then take Netty to a stream and it doesn’t take long for her to disappear into the thick grass on the bank.
Take care, Netty, and just stay away from nets!
