It’s impossible to truly comprehend the depth of affection a homeless animal can offer until we take one in. Once they find a place to call home, their loyalty and love are unshakeable.
Lakita, an American Bully, didn’t have an easy start to life. Left to fend for herself by her heartless former owners, her story has been one of struggle for survival.
She spent months alone, wandering the roads of Kentucky, hoping and waiting for bonhomie and care. She was left longing for someone to show her a glimmer of compassion.
Eventually, she was so depleted of energy, she had no choice but to nestle herself on a stranger’s porch, and slip into a restless slumber, dreaming of a brighter future.
The dawn brought with it an unexpected blessing, the miracle she’d been waiting for finally arrived at the perfect time!
Brink of Life’s End Yet Rescued Timely
A woman reached out to Tracy Korfhage from Mispits And Friends Rescue, located in Louisville, Kentucky, informing her of a rather frail dog she had discovered huddled near her porch.
Tracy, who usually refrains from picking street dogs due to associated risks, felt a gut instinct this time. The woman suggested the dog was hovering on the verge of life and death, and without wasting a moment, Tracy sprang into action!
Lakita, found atop a heap of garbage, presented an alarming sight that shattered Tracy’s heart. The sight of this poor critter, bearing a foul smell and on the losing end of survival, simply because someone chose to desert her, was truly heart-wrenching.
The hapless creature lacked any strength and appeared to have surrendered to her fate. However, Tracy wasn’t ready to give up yet!
Together with her co-worker, Tracy lifted up Lakita and transported her to the animal control facility. They held hopes for her owner to turn up eventually. But as presumed, no one ever showed up.
Remarkable Metamorphosis
Tracy chose to house Lakita in her home until the canine had fully recuperated. Then, a remarkable metamorphosis began to unfold!
Just after two weeks of shelter, Lakita miraculously gained 14 pounds. Out of her frail physique emerged a robust, solid girl. She embarked on playful sessions in Tracy’s backyard and almost completely shed her introverted skin.
“She savors simple life pleasures like basking in the yard, enjoying the breeze, gnawing on a bone or taking naps,” Tracy noted.
A lovely bond was established between Tracy and Lakita. Several months of training together turned Lakita into an entirely new individual. She mastered basic instructions and also learned to walk on a leash.
However, she wasn’t particularly fond of other dogs. Despite showing no signs of aggression, Lakita was selective about her canine company. Nonetheless, she was fully prepared to join a new family!
Lakita Finds Her Forever Home
Close to the Christmas season of 2019, Tracy and the crew captured images of Lakita in her festive attire. Instantly, the post gained widespread attention!
“She has a voracious appetite! She even performs a little jig at meal times. It was a Christmas desire for Lakita to find a home and spend the holiday nestled up viewing her beloved Christmas films. Did we also mention her enjoyment of posing as a model,” her caretakers posted on Facebook.
Lakita charmed many, but Sebastian and Ashtyn Garrison were head and shoulders above the rest. They instantly knew upon first sight that Lakita was destined to be their lifelong pet.
Sebastian and Ashtyn connected with Tracy and set up their initial encounter with Lakita. It was clear, she was destined to be a new addition to the Garrison family unit.
She instantly took a shine to her new family, and the children especially. Lakita was thrilled to finally find the right family, and the joy of being around her new siblings was immense!
With the support of her new humans, Lakita was able to move past her previous experiences and she’s since become the most content and loving girl ever!
