It is not unusual for animals to be left in a cardboard box outside an animal shelter. Unfortunately, it happens thousands of times a day around the world.
But what the employees of the animal welfare organisation Brother Wolf Animal Rescue (BWAR) in Asheville, North Carolina, are experiencing is really upsetting.
They have never experienced this before
It’s actually a quiet, ordinary day at the animal rescue centre. The staff are going about their work when suddenly the door opens.
A stranger pushes a cardboard box through the gap and throws it forcefully onto the floor. The box slides into the room.
The team of employees is frozen in shock. And before a team member can react, the stranger has already disappeared again.
A big surprise in the box
But the real surprise is yet to come. Normally, small animals, puppies or kittens are found in a cardboard box that is secretly left at the animal shelter.
When the shelter workers open the box, two adult cats jump out: a tortoiseshell and a Tuxedo cat.
The two cats are just as confused as the staff. They look around in confusion and search for a familiar face.
Help is needed now
The team knows this situation only too well. And the dedicated animal welfare activists naturally know exactly how they can help the cats now.
After a veterinary examination, the animals are left alone for the time being so that they can come to terms with the new situation.
The two beautiful cats are slowly recovering and can move to a foster home. There, Theodore and Juniper are now waiting for a forever home.
„They are doing much better“,
says Brooke Fornea, Marketing Director at BWAR.
„Juniper is super affectionate and loves attention. Theodore is still very reserved, but he has a few friends he likes and is making progress.“
Animal welfare needs active supporters
The animal welfare campaigners hope that the story of the two cats will encourage more people to get involved in animal welfare.
„There are cats like Juniper and Theodore all over the country who need help,“
emphasises Brooke Fornea.
„[Anyone can] donate, foster or adopt, and it will make a difference.“
