Vincent Dashukewich from Connecticut in the USA goes outside with his dog. Then something unexpected happens.
The furry friend smells a strange odour and growls in the direction of the pool. Vincent takes a look and makes an astonishing discovery.
A big, fat visitor
There is a cavity under the edge of the pool. It is a remnant of the larger pit in which the pool now stands.
Two attentive eyes look at Vincent from this cavity. They don’t belong to a human or a dog, but to a full-grown black bear.
„I was really shocked. It stared straight at me and I didn’t know what to do. First of all, I brought my dog into the house to be on the safe side,“
vincent explains.
Snoozing is nice
The black bear has obviously chosen the place to spend the winter. As a guest of Vincent’s family, he now also has a name: Marty.
Like most bears, black bears don’t really hibernate, they just go into hibernation. That’s why Marty realises that Vincent is here.
However, the black bear is so dozy that he is not bothered by the presence of humans.
He shows no sign of aggression and makes no attempt to leave his cosy spot.
What should you do? Nothing at all or honk away
Vincent still isn’t sure what to do with his bearish visitor. He contacts the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
They advise him to do nothing and leave the bear alone. In all likelihood, Marty will eventually go off on his own.
If he has to disappear immediately, the experts advise scaring him away from a distance with a horn and bright lights.
If that doesn’t work, wildlife experts can take care of the case. So far, however, Vincent has simply left Marty where he is.
