In the midst of an impoverished community where countless stray dogs struggle to survive, the conditions for the birth of puppies are anything but ideal.
Poverty prevails and many of the dogs are already in a poor condition.
A dog in need of urgent help
One day, the desperate yowling of a distressed female dog was heard as she was about to give birth to her puppies all alone.
The first puppy was already stillborn and stuck in the birth canal.
The situation was extremely critical and could lead to the dog’s death.
The rescue call: help from Animal Aid is on its way
A concerned neighbour heard the dog’s heart-rending cries and immediately alerted Animal Aid.
The animal welfare organisation’s staff promised to send help immediately to save the dog’s life.
The volunteer arrived and recognised the urgency of the situation. He lovingly gave the dog the name Apricot and took her to the veterinary clinic as quickly as possible.
A glimmer of hope
There, the vets realised that Apricot was carrying more puppies in her stomach. After heavy sedation and a caesarean section, a total of six puppies were born.
When Apricot woke up from the anaesthetic, she was surrounded by her new family.
Stroke of fate: loss of three puppies
But the happiness did not last long: three of the puppies fell seriously ill and crossed the Rainbow Bridge despite all efforts and treatment.
Apricot mourned their loss, but also knew that she had to be strong for the remaining three puppies.
After her recovery, Apricot and her puppies returned to their home where she can lovingly care for her offspring. The family looks very happy, as this video shows.
Unfortunately, stray animals are a sad reality in many countries as there are not enough foster families for them.
Animal Aid does a great job feeding and providing medical care to these animals, while dedicated citizens do their part every day.
Animal Aid volunteers visit Apricot and her puppies regularly to make sure they are doing well and are well cared for.
