When a driver sets off in New York City, everything seems to be as usual. He steers the car through the streets, but then suddenly he hears a strange noise.
On closer inspection, he realises that it is not just a noise, but a voice crying pitifully.
What he then sees is absolutely heartbreaking.
Trapped in the engine compartment
The car has been travelling for an hour when the driver notices the cries for help.
He hadn’t heard the desperate little voice in the noisy traffic, but as he slows down and looks for a parking space, it is unmistakable.
He stops as quickly as possible to have a look. The plaintive cries are unbearable.
The driver doesn’t have to search for long before he realises where they are coming from – from the engine compartment, not above, but below.
Worried, he lies down on the floor and slides under the car to have a look – and a small cat’s paw stretches out towards him through a narrow hole.
Difficult rescue
The shock is profound, but quick action is now required. The driver calls the animal rescuers from Animal Haven, and while he waits for them, he tries to help the kitten himself.
However, it doesn’t work that easily. The cat must have climbed into the engine compartment through the hole from below.
It can’t be reached from above, but it can’t get out of the hole either.
It’s probably partly fear that’s holding it back, and it’s probably sitting in such a way that it can’t move properly. However, the hole is really small.
In the meantime, the animal rescuers have arrived. They have cat food with them, which they now place under the hole.
The smell of the food is hopefully reason enough for the velvet paw to make an effort and help rescue her.
But it still won’t work without help. The helpers have to unscrew part of the floor panel.
But then the cat finally gets the food it has been longing for and so gets out of its prison.
Odyssey wants to go home again
The animal welfare workers take the sweet Calico cat in a box to the animal shelter, where they carry out a health check and check whether she is chipped.
Odyssey, as the velvet paw is now called, is fortunately healthy, but unfortunately she doesn’t have a microchip. However, as she is wearing a collar, she most likely has a home.
The animal shelter is now hoping that her owner will take notice of her, as the video of the rescue was posted on Instagram.
We also wish Odyssey a speedy return home and are glad she survived her adventurous trip in the engine compartment.
