This is the story of a small dog with a big problem: Rocky suffers from cerebral palsy, a persistent disorder of movement and postural control.
His owners are unable and unwilling to help Rocky and take him to a vet. But not to help him. Quite the opposite.
They want Rocky to be put to sleep. What will the vet do?
Rocky can’t walk, but otherwise he’s healthy
The vet does what most vets would probably do. He looks Rocky in the eye and realises that this little dog is determined to live.
He examines the emaciated, dehydrated and weak animal and realises that although Rocky can’t walk, he is otherwise completely healthy.
Although Rocky seems to have been neglected for quite some time, this has not changed his will to live.
There is no medical help for Rocky
As the vet can’t find a cause for Rocky’s movement disorders, he takes him to a veterinary clinic. They can’t really help Rocky there either.
But at least the doctors manage to stabilise his condition. He is soon eating well and reciprocates the love and care he receives.
A short time later, Rocky is able to move into a foster home and lead a normal, happy life.
Disabled, but far from unfit to live
Rocky’s touching story is proof that all animals, no matter how special their needs, have a right to a fulfilling, happy life.
Disabilities of any kind should never be a reason to deport or even euthanise an animal.
If a family really cannot cope with a health impairment, for whatever reason, they can get help and support.
Rocky’s story is an example of how even a severely disabled dog can lead a happy life if he gets the love and care he needs.
Rocky is the memorial that always reminds us to treat life with respect and mindfulness.
