It’s a nightmare for a family in Melbourne.
The family dog, Ollie, goes berserk for no apparent reason and mauls the face of their twelve-year-old daughter Niki.
The father takes the child to hospital immediately. Can there be a second chance for a dog like this?
Sudden transformation
Ollie is an American Pitbull Terrier and has never been a problem dog, but a loyal friend.
He showed a natural protective instinct when it came to his human family. Shortly before the attack, the dog suddenly starts growling.
Niki tells him to leave it alone and then wants to give Ollie a conciliatory kiss on the head. At that moment, the pit bull turns round and bites Niki on the face.
Cruel consequences
The consequences of the attack are gruesome. Niki loses a lot of blood. Her lips are torn and there is a gaping wound across her chin.
When her mother wants to call an ambulance, her father decides that there is no time. He takes his daughter and races her to the hospital.
On the journey, he calls his wife and explains that the dog must have disappeared by the time he and Niki return.
At the hospital
20 stitches from the outside and even more from the inside are needed to mitigate the worst effects of the attack. Further operations will be necessary.
The costs are beyond the family’s financial means. An appeal for donations on GoFundMe is intended to help.
Ollie is put to sleep
The dog doesn’t get a second chance after this terrible attack.
A city employee arrives while Niki is in hospital to take him away and put him to sleep.
„My son and I had to put Ollie in the back of the pick-up and say goodbye. So I said goodbye to my friend, my dog, but I couldn’t trust him anymore,“
says Niki’s mum.
As terrible as this story is, we should be wary of prejudices against the entire dog breed.
The pit bull obviously had some undetected disorder, otherwise he wouldn’t have turned into a biting machine from one second to the next.
