For homeless people, a dog can be a source of support, a focal point and motivation. Many put their dogs above their own well-being.
But sometimes you can’t look after your four-legged friend properly, because vaccinations, food and other care don’t come for free.
This was the case for Jada and her owner, a 17-year-old homeless teenager. He loved his four-month-old dog, but could no longer find a way to care for her himself.
When animal shelters are the last resort
Despite all his love for each other, the teenager had to realise that he could not look after Jada properly. Moreover, examinations at the doctor were beyond his means.
With a heavy heart, he decided to hand her over to an animal shelter in the hope of giving her a better life.
The staff at the shelter, which was barely able to take in any new dogs as they were hopelessly overcrowded after the pandemic, could only comply with this request.
When animal shelters post the stories of their charges
As with every animal they took into their care, the shelter also posted Jada’s story. However, the staff were keen to emphasise that the teenager and the dog found it difficult to separate.
They shared the young homeless dog’s plight with their readers and followers and promptly received pledges of help from other dog owners.
Money, vouchers and medical care such as vaccinations and sterilisation were donated.
After just a few weeks, Jada and her young master were emotionally reunited. Thanks to the Post’s help, Jada was even able to find a new home.
When animal shelters provide a whole new happy ending
The reunion and the gratitude of the teenager and his dog were also shared by the shelter staff with their community online.
The story continued to spread and suddenly an excited woman contacted the animal shelter. She said she was the boy’s mum.
He had disappeared over a year ago and she only had one wish: to see him again and take him and his Jada in.
