Whilst walking through Hewlett, New York, a man suddenly hears strange noises coming from a sewer.
Curious, he goes in search of the source of the noise and discovers a full-grown raccoon screaming into the manhole.
Irritated, he takes a closer look and decides to call for professional help as soon as he discovers what is in the sewer.
Quick help in a difficult situation
A small, fluffy ball of fluff is sitting on the floor of the manhole – a baby raccoon.
It can’t get out on its own and so its mother screams desperately down the manhole.
The man who discovers the two immediately calls the local wildlife rescue centre.
Karenlynn Stracher, a wildlife rescuer, is quickly on the scene and calls for more help after assessing the situation.
John Debacker, also a wildlife rescuer, and a local rescue unit come to the aid of the desperate little family.
Together they start the rescue operation and work as a team.
They actually manage to save the little raccoon.
A new life for the little raccoon
Unfortunately, a violent storm has come up in the meantime, so the mother raccoon flees and can no longer be found.
This makes the planned reunion impossible.
Fortunately, the wildlife rescue team has another idea and brings the little raccoon in need of help to a rehabilitation centre.
Here it takes some time to settle in, but then it enjoys life with the other rescued raccoons to the full.
„She was integrated into a group of other orphan bears who were raised like a family,“
reports Karenlynn.
After successful rearing, the small raccoon group is now ready.
They have all regained their strength and grown into independent and fit raccoons.
Together they will be released into the wild and can now lead a happy life in nature.
Karenlynn is sure that the rescued raccoon girl will be fine:
„When she was released, she was strong, healthy and very wild. I’m sure she will be successful!“
