Australia is known for its breathtaking wildlife and picturesque landscapes. But even in this idyllic setting, accidents sometimes happen and the animal inhabitants of the fifth continent get into trouble.
In such cases, animal welfare activists like WIRES Australian Wildlife Rescue, Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organisation, help to save these precious lives.
This case is particularly amazing and takes twists and turns that no one would have expected. In the end, the WIRES helpers realise a dream that all animal conservationists dream of.
Destroyed in a storm
It all begins with an attentive arborist who has to clear away a tree trunk after a storm.
He discovers a blurred lump in the splintered wood. Curious, he takes a closer look at the fluffy thing.
It turns out to be a nest – with two tiny baby lorikeet parrots.
Help is needed
The arborist immediately realises that he needs help with the rescue, so he calls the wildlife rescuers from WIRES.
They immediately send two experts in parrot chicks. They don’t have to think long about what to do.
The wildlife rescuers build a nesting box for the two Lori chicks, which is attached to the splintered tree trunk.
„It is unlikely that they would have survived in such an unprotected nest exposed to the elements. Therefore, attaching the nest box was the perfect solution,“
explains a WIRES representative.
Now the work begins
But the work of the animal rescuers is far from over. Every evening, they come to the nesting box and feed the parrot chicks, which eagerly accept the food.
And then, one evening, the animal rescuers can hardly believe what they see: The lorikeet parents have returned.
Incredible as it is, the parents accept their chicks, feed them and raise them.
„At that moment, they had achieved a successful reunion, which is always the best outcome for any chick or fledgling.“
says the WIRES representative happily.
This is what all animal welfare activists dream of: providing a species-appropriate life for the animals in their care.
