The reasons why people give up their pets are as varied as the pets themselves.
It often boils down to owners feeling overwhelmed and unable to give their four-legged friends the time and care they deserve.
Such is the case with a two-year-old American Bulldog.
A dog alone at the North Linwood entrance to Patterson Park in Baltimore
There, the dog is tied to a tree, along with a note from his owners:
„My name is Duke. Here are my favourite toys and food. I’m looking for a new home.“
Apart from the fact that the dog is very scared, it is also very cold outside.
Leslie Gray’s husband first discovers Luke when he takes his own dog for a walk.
Another local resident, Stephanie Dagenhart, feels compelled to act, shares Luke’s story on Facebook and calls the rescue team.
Since it’s so cold, she stays with Duke until rescuers arrive.
In the meantime, her Facebook post causes a storm of outrage. People are dismayed by the heartless actions of Duke’s owners.
People are concerned about Duke’s fate
When animal control arrives, a small crowd of neighbours has already gathered, doing their best to keep Duke warm and calm with towels and treats.
At the same time, Stephanie’s Facebook post is making more and more waves. There are already the first prospective adopters.
Bailey Deacon, a spokesperson for BARCS, emphasises that if people are unable to care for their pet, it’s best to take it to a shelter.
Tying the animal to a tree and leaving it to its fate is definitely not an option.
A new home for Duke
He is adopted by a US army specialist named Wallace White, who is unaware of Duke’s sudden fame.
It is only when a friend brings it to his attention that he learns of Duke’s sad story.
Wallace falls head over heels in love with Duke, simply because of who he is.
So Duke’s story has a happy ending, but we mustn’t forget the many other pets who are still waiting for their second chance.
