Like every morning, the headmaster of a primary school in West Virginia wants to unlock the large rubbish bin behind the school.
He always locks it in the evening because the school is in a very rural area. He wants to prevent animals from climbing into the bin overnight.
So far it’s just a normal Monday morning, but then…
When he opens the bin, he gets the scare of his life
As usual, headmaster James Marsh puts the key in the lock, turns it round and lifts the lid of the bin. But now he quickly recoils in shock.
The reason is a bear. And the bear is not standing next to him or behind the bin – no, it is sitting comfortably in the bin and looking at the headmaster.
The bear looks at least as surprised as Marsh. He is probably a little indignant about the disturbance.
Somehow he must have managed to squeeze under the locked lid of the bin and not come out again.
Marsh says:
„I reckon he ate a big meal in there and then had a nap. Maybe he ate too much to climb out again.“
The headmaster has already recovered from the shock and quickly shoots a video of the bear in the bin. After all, you don’t see something like this every day.
But the bear doesn’t seem to want to be filmed. It quickly climbs out of the container and runs away.
An important lesson and a priceless memory
The headmaster runs off too, but in the opposite direction: to the school building.
He can hardly wait to tell his pupils about this breathtaking encounter. Luckily he shot the video, otherwise they would certainly not believe him.
The pupils are very impressed and find the sight hilarious.
But Marsh doesn’t just want to amuse his pupils, he uses this rare event for teaching purposes. He explains to the children how important it is to respect bears and their territories.
Marsh has always been a nature lover and is delighted with this extraordinary experience in retrospect.
He recalls:
„I love nature and have lived near wildlife all my life. You have to expect encounters. I just didn’t expect to be so close. It’s a priceless memory and I always smile when I tell that story.“
