If you are an animal lover and have your heart set on dogs, as we do, then it will always be difficult for you not to take a frightened or emaciated stray dog into the car and give it a better life.
Unfortunately, many of us have other things to do than help these poor creatures.
For some people, however, rescuing dogs is a dream come true. They experience incredible love from the furry friends and encourage others to help dogs as much as they can.
Four abandoned puppies
It all began in 2008, when Sasha from Serbia went for a walk and found four puppies that had obviously been abandoned and were roaming around his home town, scared and hungry.
He opened his heart to the four cute creatures, took them home, nursed them back to health and also provided veterinary care.
Sasha’s Shelter
Today, he runs an animal shelter and currently looks after almost 750 dogs.
After finding the four puppies, he realised that the street dogs in Serbia needed help and that he wanted to be that someone.
He rented a farm and converted it into a dog shelter. Slowly but surely, he began to collect the dogs in his neighbourhood and now takes in neglected creatures from precarious or dangerous backgrounds.
The dogs in his yard are not only fed and given a place to sleep. He and his six volunteers provide veterinary care.
The dogs are vaccinated, sterilised if necessary, chipped and properly registered.
Incredible track record
Over the course of around ten years, Sasha has collected over 1,200 dogs in this way and has demonstrably saved the lives of many of them.
400 dogs have found a better future in a loving home through his mediation.
In the videos and pictures that Sasha regularly posts, everyone can see how much the animals love him and how happy the Serbian is in his job.
Donors wanted
Although the Serbian government wants to „clean up“ the streets from strays, Sasha’s animal shelter receives no help from the state.
He finances everything out of his own pocket and is dependent on donations from animal lovers from all over the world.
Time and again, he even has to fight the authorities, who regularly try to close his animal shelter. Even the owner of the farm is trying to get rid of him as a tenant.
Sasha estimates the current costs for one month’s food, care and medical treatment at around 20,000 dollars. Anyone who wants to open their heart to these dogs and this truly marvellous effort is welcome to donate!
