The property in this video is in a beautiful location in Florida.
A river flows past on both sides and mighty trees stretch into the sky in the background.
Suddenly, two dogs run across the meadow towards the water. They have noticed something there.
Ripples in the water
At first you don’t recognise more than a slight wave movement. The two dogs are very excited.
Just below the surface of the water, an animal swims very close to the shore. The two dogs jump ahead and almost pay for it with their lives.
Lucky again
Suddenly, a grey body appears on the surface of the water. Then you see a large fin.
It strikes with all its might just centimetres from where the smaller dog is standing. There is a loud bang and the water splashes high into the air.
If this hit, there wouldn’t have been much left of the dog.
Allow me, Caribbean Manati
The animal that is hitting the water so furiously here is a Caribbean manatee from the round-tailed manatee family.
Like whales, the tail fin of these animals is orientated horizontally and is used for propulsion when swimming.
Unlike whales, the tail of the Caribbean manatee is round to spade-shaped and can also be used as a weapon if necessary, as this video impressively shows.
The main habitat of these manatees is the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Occasionally, the animals migrate up the lower reaches of rivers.
Criticism of the dog’s owner
Some viewers of the video criticise the dog owner for letting his dogs into the water.
„Nothing is worse than people who don’t keep their dogs on a lead,“
writes user Yoga Flame, for example.
To be fair, however, it must be said that the dogs are on the owner’s own property and it is the dogs themselves that are in danger, not the Caribbean manatee.
