It’s a normal day when Christina Biery goes for a walk on the beach at Port Aransas in Texas, USA.
But this time it’s different, because an incredible number of starfish have washed up on the beach.
She knows immediately that she has to take action. But she has no idea how this day will turn out.
The rescue operation begins
Starfish are living creatures and cannot survive outside the water.
The sight of so many starfish on the beach is therefore shocking. Christina reacts quickly, because without her help all the starfish would die.
She does her best and brings every single starfish back into the water.
There they have a chance to survive and recover from the shock.
As she continues to try and save all the starfish, she comes across something unusual that she has never seen before.
A huge starfish has been washed ashore, it is bigger than her face and is trying to crawl along the shore.
Unsure whether she can save the large animal, she does her best and tries to help this starfish too.
„The body was as big as the palm of my hand,“
says Christina.
„Its legs were dangling when I picked it up.“
The large starfish belongs to a species that lives buried in the sand off the coast. During storms and high waves, the animals can be washed up on the beach.
In the area where Christina lives, it has been very windy recently, which is probably the reason for the incredible amount of starfish on the beach.
Christina hadn’t expected her walk, which she had done hundreds of times before, to turn into a rescue mission that day.
But thanks to her courageous intervention and quick action, many starfish, including the giant specimen, can now live safely in the seawater again.
