Greenleigh in Australia is a tranquil little town with a population of 676. People here live in good neighbourly relations with the animals from the surrounding area.
Sometimes, however, human dwellings prove to be a danger for our friends from the animal kingdom.
A beautiful Pennant parakeet can tell you a thing or two about that.
In the trap
Pennant parakeets belong to the Old World parrot family and are truly magnificent birds.
One such beauty is out and about on a Greenleigh resident’s property and before he knows it, he’s stuck in a drainpipe.
It would have been his end had the woman of the house not noticed him.
Teamwork is a must
Now the woman knows nothing about parakeets or drainpipes.
She hasn’t the faintest idea how to get the poor bird out again. So she calls the animal rescue organisation Wildcare Queanbeyan.
That covers the bird expertise, but she still needs someone who knows about pipes.
Demetrius Plumbing and Earthworks is the right address. The company has laid the pipes and is now sending staff round.
Together with Maryanne Gates from Wildcare Queanbeyan, they form the rescue team.
Loud, but necessary
They quickly agree on how to proceed. The bird cannot be removed from the pipe in its current form, there is nothing that can be done.
Tough methods are now required. A saw is fired up with a loud roar and the pipe is sawn through above the bird’s head.
The parakeet probably thought that the noise was the last straw, but the opposite is the case.
Maryanne Gates grabs the terrified bird and it is saved.
Breakfast with apple and seeds
Unfortunately, the parakeet is not in a good condition. He is weak and dehydrated. So Maryanne takes him home as an overnight guest.
Thankfully, the feathered fellow is not injured. Now he can recover overnight.
He is much better the next morning. He is given a hearty breakfast of apples and seeds and nothing stands in the way of his return to the wild.
Maryanne takes him back to the area where he was rescued. She watches in delight as the parakeet takes to the air and returns to his family waiting for him in the trees.
