It’s a normal day in the suburbs of Wodonga in Australia. A woman is strolling through the neighbourhood, looking here and there, quite leisurely.
But suddenly she stops abruptly. She has spotted a figure in a neighbour’s carport and immediately realises that it is someone who needs her help.
A huddled heap of misery
On closer inspection, the woman realises it is a kangaroo.
These animal inhabitants of Australia are not rarely seen in the area, as they live on nearby Huon Hill.
The people of Wodonga live in peaceful coexistence with the hopping marsupials as well as the rest of nature.
So you might think it’s quite normal for the kangaroos to have a look round the garages and gardens of the town’s inhabitants.
But visits from the animals to humans are rare and this kangaroo is certainly not having fun.
It is huddled in a corner of the carport, alone and sad, looking completely helpless.
Sore feet
The woman immediately calls the animal rescue organisation Wildlife Victoria, which sends some staff from the Kangaloola Wildlife Shelter as quickly as possible.
When they arrive, the kangaroo is still in the same place and just as unhappy.
Although it makes no great effort to resist the rescue, the helpers anaesthetise the animal for transport.
Fortunately, the young male kangaroo has no serious injuries and appears generally fit.
However, he has nasty abrasions on his feet from running over the rough tarmac.
Back in the wild
At the rescue centre, the rescuers disinfect and bandage the poor broken kangaroo’s feet.
The marsupial remains at the shelter until it has recovered. It is naturally shy of humans and the staff are very relieved about this.
This means that it can easily be released back into the wild.
This is what happens a little later. The kangaroo is taken to Hidden Valley, a valley very close to Huon Hill. The helpers suspect that the marsupial’s family is there.
As soon as he is free, the young male kangaroo hops away joyfully, happy about his healed feet and the end of his urban adventure.
Hopefully the kangaroo will tell all his friends that you get sore feet in the city and should stay at home in nature.
