A cat has its favorite spot outside on a windowsill, at a threatening height.
When animal rights activists try to rescue it, they don’t know how at first. But when they finally succeed, they realize that the cat had a big secret.
Cat lives with 40 others
Stratus the cat didn’t have much space to himself. Like so many New Yorkers, she shared her home with other housemates.
In her case, with a whopping 40 other kitties!
The only place that was „hers“ was a narrow windowsill. And it was dangerously high off the ground.
When her rescuers from Animal Haven heard about her precarious situation, they immediately rushed to her aid.
Stratus‘ owner was completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of cats in his home – and had asked the shelter for help.
Kitty cats move into the shelter one by one
Animal Haven initially brought 10 to 15 cats to the shelter. When the rescuers entered the house for the third time, they saw Stratus sitting high above them, staring down at them.
Animal Haven considered the best course of action. And decided to let Stratus come inside on her own.
„When the owner told us that she often sits on the windowsill, we were worried that we would scare her and she would fall off,“
said Shannon McLaughlin Kirkman, an employee of Animal Haven.
„Even though it was a difficult decision, we decided to wait.“
Stratus eventually came inside, too.

But not because she was desperate to see her rescuers. No – Stratus was pregnant and had gone into labor.
When her rescuers finally found her inside, she had just given birth to her kittens.
„We were already shocked – but we’ve seen much more shocking things,“
said Kirkman.
„We’re glad we let her come inside on her own. Because saving her could have been really dangerous if she was already in labor.“
Proud mom and her babies rescued
Stratus and her babies received all the medical care they needed at Animal Haven.
The little feline family will stay at the shelter until the kittens are old enough to move into their forever homes.
Kirkman is really proud of Str atus and grateful that she and her babies can now live the life they deserve.
„Stratus is a wonderful mama cat,“
says Kirkman:
„She and her babies are all content and happy.“
