A captain named Paco Jimenez Franco has unusual friends in the waters of Ojo de Liebre, a lagoon on the Pacific coast of Mexico’s Baja peninsula.
He has been working as a whale-watching captain for 20 years and has the opportunity to observe these majestic animals at close range – a gift, as he calls it. But he doesn’t just watch, he helps.
The parasitic whale lice
During his observations, he came across something unusual – some of the whales had whale lice, parasitic appendages, on their bodies.
Franco decided to help one whale by removing some lice from it. But what happened next exceeded his expectations.
„As soon as I had removed the first [louse], [the whale] approached again so I could continue. I did this repeatedly, with the same whale and others. It’s very exciting for me“,
franco tells The Dodo.
The whale kept coming to Franco and holding its head out of the water to be cleaned.
It almost seemed as if the whale was seeking Franco’s help and enjoying the captain’s company.
Franco sees this unusual relationship with the whale as a gift. He feels honored and amazed that an animal as majestic as a whale would come so close to him and trust him.
