The sheep in this video have gathered in front of a gate. They are supposed to go through the gate, but many of them don’t feel like it.
Border Collie Echo’s job is to prevent the sheep from breaking out of the flock and to corral them. He performs this task with phenomenal dedication.
Echo in his element
Border Collies love tasks and they love challenges.
These energetic dogs were originally bred in the border country between England and Scotland specifically for this trait.
Their job was to corral flocks of sheep or drive them from one pasture to the next.
In this video, Echo shows the enthusiasm with which a Border Collie is still dedicated to this task today.
Not so lamb-friendly
The sheep are by no means as obedient and lamblike as these animals are often said to be.
One of them is constantly trying to escape and time and again Echo is on the spot in seconds to catch the runaway. This leads to some hilarious scenes.
On one occasion, a sheep is unable to slow down in time before Echo blocks its path. It has no choice but to jump into the air.
Incentive and praise
Echo is probably a Border Collie in training, but already at an advanced stage.
The shepherd hurries the dog here and there with his commands. Sometimes he is told to stop, sometimes to run off, sometimes to lie down on the ground in front of the sheep.
Each time Echo carries out the command in such a flash that it is hard to believe. And he gets plenty of praise for it.
Not a trace of aggression
After all, the sheep have no choice but to go through the gate. Echo has already internalized one very important aspect.
He should not be aggressive towards the sheep and must not bite them under any circumstances. No barking, growling or snapping can be heard or seen.
Echo is doing a really great job!
