Rabbits are popular pets that delight many people with their long ears and clumsy paws.
However, they cannot survive in the wild, even if they look similar to wild rabbits.
However, they are two different animal species, and domestic rabbits released into the wild often meet a bad fate.
Abandoned with poor prospects
If a pet owner can no longer or no longer wants to look after their pet, there is the possibility of finding a new home for the animal.

In case of doubt, it can also be handed in to the animal shelter, where the staff will look for a new home.
Unfortunately, some pet owners do not seem to be aware of their responsibility and opt for a cruel alternative: simply abandoning the animal.
For rabbits, this is often a death sentence. They quickly find themselves in dangerous situations and it is usually only a matter of time before something goes wrong.
This is what happens to the frightened rabbit discovered on a busy highway.

An attentive driver alerts the animal welfare organization Animal Care & Control San Francisco.
Touching rescue operation
When the three officers arrive, the terrified rabbit is huddled against the concrete shoulder as the vehicles speed by.
Officers Ortega, Tumath and Quirk manage to stop the traffic on the road and safely capture the rabbit.
It turns out that the rabbit is female, and she is given the name Elektra.

Luckily, she escaped with a scare and is doing fine.
„She will stay at the shelter for a few days to see if an owner comes forward for her.
If no one comes forward, she could be put up for adoption early next week,“
reports the animal welfare organization.
So Elektra’s story had a happy ending after all.
Unfortunately, not all animals are so lucky.
It shows once again how important the helping and loving hands of animal rescuers and a watchful eye for animals in need are.
