Perryville, Missouri (USA) – Rick Haley and his buddy were once again pursuing their hobby as cave explorers when they accidentally made an incredible discovery.

An incredible discovery
Rick Haley and his friend regularly explore the winding caves of the Tom More Cave System Test in Perry County.
The group was exploring a cave when suddenly the glow of the flashlight hit something moving at a distant angle.
As they approached, they saw that it was a small female dog curled up in a corner of the cave, shivering and freezing.
Rick remembered the moment very well and said afterwards:
„The bitch wasn’t well at all.“
The shivering heap of misery was too weak to get to her feet on her own, and the cavers had nothing they could use as a stretcher to get the dog to safety.
The group decided to leave the cave in order to return better equipped to save the dog.
Rescue at the last second
A short time later, the group returned to the dog and placed her in the carrier bag they had brought with them. Together they set off on the arduous journey back to daylight.
Although the group was in a kilometer-long cave system, they were very lucky and found an opening in the ceiling after 150 meters, which brought them directly back to the surface.
They climbed up the narrow wall. The dog was carefully carried in her bag towards daylight until they reached the opening.
The dog knew that the humans wanted to save her and trusted them. She stayed calmly in her bag the whole time and waited.
When the group climbed out of the cave, the dog clearly showed her great joy and gratitude at being rescued.

Now that the lost dog had been rescued thanks to the cavers, the search for her home began.
The group contacted the local fire department. Together with the firefighters, they went to the nearest town and rang every doorbell.
Anyone who answered the doorbell was asked if they were missing their dog.
And they did indeed find the dog’s home! It turned out that the dog had run away two months ago.
But no one had an answer as to how she had gotten into the cave and, more importantly, how she had survived in the wild for two months.

The fact that the amateur cave explorers were in the right place at the right time saved the dog’s life.
She was incredibly lucky and the group has a story they will tell each other for a long time to come.
