Somewhere in Australia, a construction worker is busy working on a two-storey building that is currently being completed.
When the man happens to take a look at the neighbouring property, he is startled. He has spotted a pink-coloured figure in the grass. What could it be?
A distinctive call
It quickly becomes clear that it is an animal, as the construction worker hears a distinctive and penetrating call.
As he gets closer, he realises that there is a small baby kangaroo lying there.
Kangaroo babies, known in Australia as joeys, spend up to six months in their mother’s pouch.
The little one, which is still hairless, should not be lying here alone in the grass. Unfortunately, there is no sign of the mother and she is not found later either.
Either she has abandoned her young or something has happened to her. We will never know for sure.
Professionals help
So what do you do when you find an orphaned baby animal that has no chance of surviving on its own?
The construction worker does the only right thing and contacts the animal rescue organisation Our Haven Wildlife Shelter.
It doesn’t take long for a member of staff to turn up and take the little kangaroo away.
Growing up and then back to freedom
As Theresa Matthews from Our Haven Wildlife Shelter reports, the little orphan is fortunately not injured.
The baby animal is first given a bottle and allowed to drink its fill. In the time that followed, the little kangaroo recovered and developed splendidly.
It will say goodbye to humans when it is old enough to survive on its own in the wild.
