A couple in Price, Utah, are taking their usual walk along a canal. But something is different today.
What are those desperate noises coming from the water? On closer inspection, it becomes clear:
A little dog is fighting for her life down there. Her name is Chica, as it turns out later.
No escape alone possible
The banks are too steep for Chica to simply climb out of the canal.
The couple, in turn, cannot get over the barbed wire fence that blocks the way to the water on their side of the canal.
So they immediately call the police. A Captain Brandon Ratcliffe answers the call.
As soon as he hears what’s going on, he sets off.
Over the fence
„Upon our arrival, Chica was barking and panting incessantly while clinging to the bank with her front paws.“
This is how Captain Ratcliffe describes the sight that presents itself to him and another police officer named Tapia. Then he continues:
„The noises she was making sounded like she was having trouble breathing or had water in her lungs.“
So there’s no time to lose. Captain Ratcliffe scales the fence and Officer Tapia manages to open a gate on the other side of the canal.
However, Tapia’s intervention is no longer necessary. Captain Ratcliffe gets hold of little Chica and doesn’t let her go.
New friend of the police
At first, Captain Ratcliffe wants to take Chica to a shelter so she can recover.
But then, according to a report on the dodo, he changes his mind and takes the adorable dog home with him.
He then takes her to the police station, where Chica immediately makes friends with the police officers present.
Reunited
The best news comes at the end. Chica is chipped and the police quickly manage to track down her owner.
Chica’s owner had been desperately searching for her little treasure and is naturally overjoyed. Now she can hold her beloved Chica in her arms again.
The woman would like to show her financial gratitude to the couple who found Chica in the canal.
But nobody wants any money. Everyone involved is just happy that Chica has been rescued.
