If you can’t decide between a Labrador and a Rottweiler, you will definitely like the Labrottie.
The targeted breeding of the Labrador-Rottweiler mix, also known as the Rottador, Labweiler or Rotten Lab, began in the 1990s in the USA. In the meantime, however, the Labrottie has also become increasingly popular in Germany.
Appearance of the Labrottie
Every mixed breed puppy is a big surprise. This also applies to the Labrottie, although its parents have a similar stature.
As the Rottweiler is larger and stronger than the Labrador, Labrotties are usually between their parents in size and weight. However, there are strong fluctuations.
Male Labrotties grow to an average height of between 57 and 68 centimetres, while female Labrotties are between 54 and 63 centimetres. The weight of both sexes varies between 32 and 50 kilograms.
As a rule, the Labrottie looks like a perfect mix: it has the build of a Rottweiler with the head shape and muzzle of a Labrador.
The Labrador usually has a stronger influence on the coat color. If the Labrador is yellow, the Labrottie puppies usually have a lighter coat.
If both parents are black, the offspring will also be black and may even have the characteristic mahogany-colored markings of the Rottweiler.
Character of the Labrottie
There are similarities and differences in the temperament of the parents, so the nature of the Labrottie also contains surprises.
Labradors and Rottweilers are both active, athletic, calm, even-tempered and willing to work.
But while Labradors are friendly and open-minded towards strangers, Rottweilers are suspicious and show their protective instinct. This is why Labrotties are often more reserved than their Labrador parents.
From both sides, however, the Labrottie inherits loyalty and attachment to its humans, as well as the nature of a child-loving family dog.
Anyone choosing a Labrottie should be aware that Rottweilers are listed dogs in some German states. This classification usually also applies to Rottweiler mixes.
In fact, the Labrottie shows a certain potential for aggression. The peaceful, obedient character of the Labrador counteracts this, but it depends on which part is inherited more strongly.
In any case, Labrotties need to be well socialized with people, other dogs and other animals from puppyhood and trained consistently, but of course lovingly.
It is also important that the Labrottie gets enough exercise, sporting activity and species-appropriate tasks to keep him physically and mentally busy.
