Witnessing dogs being returned to the shelter after they’ve been adopted is one of the most emotionally distressing experiences, as their dejected and downtrodden expressions can induce tears.

Sadly, such incidents occur frequently, and the canine which is the subject of today’s tale was not exempt.

Our furry friend Lola found herself returned to the shelter not just once, but twice, within the first seven months of her existence.

As a result, Lola was resolved to leave an unforgettable mark on the next family who would adopt her. And that, indeed, is exactly what she accomplished.

Third Attempt Proves Successful

Cristina Antonucci was browsing a pet rescue website when she came across a compelling black-and-white face belonging to a dog named Lola.

Seeing a resemblance to her childhood English Bull Terrier mix, Christina felt a pull to meet this delightful canine directly.

“In her picture, her eyes conveyed such sadness that I was moved to take her in. The minute she arrived with her foster mother, she was the most adorable creature, coming straight to sit at my feet and looking up into my eyes,” said Christina in an interview with The Dodo.

Lola’s first adoption by a teenager when she was a tiny pup was short-lived, and she was soon returned to the shelter. Her experience with her second adopter, who was a novice dog parent, also ended similarly as they struggled to meet her needs.

Upon learning about Lola’s past misfortunes, Christina decided that she understood Lola’s needs and could provide those needs in a loving home.

When Lola arrived at her new residence, she wasted no time in showing Christina her appreciation for the efforts taken.

“The night she first came home, she spent hours cozied up on my lap. It was surprising and heartwarming how quickly she adjusted to me because at that moment, we’d only shared a car ride home. It was like she was expressing her gratitude, and I realized then that I couldn’t fail her,” Christina relayed.

A Fresh Start

Regrettably, Lola was largely shaped by her past, leading her to do some things she shouldn’t have done.

Fortunately, her new guardians were understanding and patient with her from the get-go.

“She gave us a few tests of patience with activities like digging in the yard, trying to escape through the fence for some playtime with the neighboring dog. We knew, though, if we weren’t patient with her, who else would be?” they shared.

In spite of these trying times, Christina was thankful for Lola, acknowledging the significant life lessons the dog taught her.

“Definitely, Lola taught me the art of patience and persistence. No matter the hurdles, giving up is not an option. Nobody is flawless,” she further explained.

Fortunately, Lola’s digging period didn’t persist, as she transitioned into a backyard opossum supervisor.

The addition of a newborn sibling, Lenny, also contributed to this transformation.

Being an elated elder sister, Lola was enthralled to have the most adorable junior playmate.

“They’ve become the best of pals and spend all their time playing. They’ve only known each other for a month and a half, but they’ve grown so fond of each other, even sharing the same bed,” she detailed.

The satisfaction of providing Lola with a nurturing and joyful home filled Christina with immense joy.

The initial minor struggles made their bond even more cherished.

“The best part of my day is reaching home and spending time with her. She indeed has a special corner of my heart,” concluded Christina.
