A truck rattles along the road in the Chinese metropolis of Harbin. Its destination: a slaughterhouse.
A golden retriever is among the animals heading towards their end. Then fate intervenes.
From Harbin to Cobham
The fact that the dog never arrives at the slaughterhouse is thanks to the animal rescue organization Harbin SHS Animal Rescue.
First of all, the two-year-old furry friend needs to be nursed back to health as she is suffering from a dangerous viral disease.
Then the search for a new home can begin. Penny France became aware of an Instagram photo of the dog through a friend.
She applies and is accepted. You can’t say that Penny lives nearby.
She lives in the sleepy little town of Cobham in the south of England, thousands of miles away. This is where the dog, now called Brooklyn, finally arrives.
Out of the box and into the garden
When Brooklyn arrives in a transport box, Penny and her husband are as excited as little children.
Despite all the friendly encouragement, Brooklyn is initially far too frightened to leave his box.
With some good coaxing and treats, they finally manage to lure the intimidated fellow out. He then gains confidence incredibly quickly.
Just two hours later, Brooklyn is cuddling up to Penny and doesn’t want to stop. A very special moment awaits him in the garden.
As he sits here on a blanket, feels the wind in his fur and looks up at the sky over the treetops, he can’t believe his incredible happiness.
A new life
Brooklyn hasn’t met the whole family yet. That changes the next day when he meets Stanley for the first time, who was previously the only family dog.
The two quickly become best friends. They are lucky that their humans spend practically every free minute with the two furry friends.
Hiking, boating, swimming, visits to the beach and garden pubs: Dogs couldn’t ask for more active two-legged friends.
