Shane Maddison has been behind the wheel of his car for quite a while. Now he finally has to take a break and pulls over to the side of the road. By chance, his gaze falls into the undergrowth.
Something is moving there. Shane moves closer to find out what it is.
A family in the rubbish
He can’t believe what he sees now. There, among the rubbish, sits a cat with four little kittens.
She has an injured leg and, as it turns out later, her pelvic bone is also broken.
There is no way the cat can survive here without help. Much less can she look after her four children, who are facing imminent starvation.
Accident or heartlessness?
It is impossible to say exactly how the cat family ended up here in a bush full of rubbish.
Perhaps she gave birth to her four kittens and was then hit by a car.
It is also possible that a heartless person deliberately left the cat family here.
The rescue operation
The most important thing now is to organise help quickly. Shane contacts his brother-in-law and sister-in-law.
Laura Barber from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals joins the rescue operation.
„The rescue was quite lengthy. At one point we had all the kittens in the transport box, but then one of them jumped back into the undergrowth.“
the animal rights activist later recalled. Eventually, however, all the kittens and their mum were safely placed in the box.
Impending amputation
The first stop was the vet because the mum cat urgently needed to be examined and treated.
At first the vet feared that one of her legs would have to be amputated. Fortunately, the injuries heal surprisingly well.
A real happy ending
Shane’s brother-in-law and sister-in-law take in the cats as a foster family. Mum is now called Luna.
Her four children are named Boo, Daphne, Pumpkin and Fred. Luna will stay with her foster parents forever.
Interested parties from family and friends have already registered for the kittens. It’s a real happy ending for the velvet paws.
