Upon the admission of a small, stray puppy into a Los Angeles, California-based animal shelter, staff members were instantly taken aback upon their first glimpse of her. Emphasizing the puppy’s baldness, the cause of this unusual condition was a mystery to everyone.
There was speculation among the staff that the young dog’s hair loss might have been the result of mange, scabies, or potentially even allergies.
Due to budget constraints, the shelter was unable to conduct the extensive testing required to diagnose the small stray. As a result, they were uncertain on how best to proceed with her treatment.
The hapless pooch, who was named Blossom at a later date, remained in her cage, suffering from discomfort and incessant itching. However, in spite of the grim situation she found herself in, Blossom remained hopeful. She fervently believed that eventually, someone would take notice of her predicament and come to her aid when she needed it the most.
An Amazing Individual Chooses to Lend a Hand
Gretchen May, a fervent canine enthusiast, was yearning to add another puppy to her household.
While perusing through the various shelter websites one day, she found a post about a tiny, hairless dog with wrinkled skin, which piqued her interest.
May observed a disheartening melancholy in the darling eyes of the dog, which tugged at her heartstrings. There was a strong feeling inside her that this was the dog she had been seeking all along.
„The shelter photo displayed her in such a pitiful state, and yet she had a touch of sweetness to her. I couldn’t bear seeing her suffering, so itchy and distressed, left untreated in the animal shelter for seven long days! I couldn’t help but ponder who else would be bold enough to take a gamble on such an unkempt creature,“ May shared with The Dodo.
May reached out to Precious Pals Pet Rescue and forwarded them Blossom’s post. She expressed her intent to adopt the dog, and inquired if they could assist in rescuing Blossom from the shelter.
The moment the rescuers laid eyes on the tiny hairless puppy, they were smitten. They immediately assented to help.
Blossom Finds Comfort in Her Mother’s Embrace
Blossom was rescued from a shelter by the rescuers who then whisked her to the vet’s clinic for a health checkup.
She was found to be grappling with kennel cough, upper respiratory infection, ear infection and even physical injuries on her body. Scrapping of her skin was undertaken by the vet to decode the reason behind her hair loss.
The caregivers were deeply upset by the deplorable state Blossom was in due to years of neglect.
“The harsh skin condition speaks volumes of years of disregard and her eyes exhibit mild cataracts probably due to the prolonged exposure to sunlight outdoors here in So.Cal. We are eager to see her pain ease,” were the words of Precious Pals Pet Rescue on their Facebook page.
Post spending the night at the vet’s clinic, Blossom was shifted to her permanent loving home.
Despite her degenerating health, Blossom seemed to feel a sense of relief finding a home full of love. She reveled in the care bestowed upon her by her new mom.
Once the test results arrived, May, Blossom’s mom was relieved to know that it was not scabies or mange that were troubling her pet. It was believed by the vets that allergies were the culprit.
In order to recuperate, Blossom was put on medication and her mom gave her medicated baths. This acted as a catalyst in her healing process and her skin started to regain its texture slowly but surely.
A month hence, there signs of fresh growth of fur which was still sparse. There was hope in her forever home that once all her other health issues are resolved, the allergies would be managed better.
The Enigma of Her Past
The breed of dog that Blossom belonged to was unknown. Her prior existence remained an intriguing enigma.
It was believed by her family that Blossom once had fur, yet uncertainty loomed as her skin was excessively delicate to predict regrowth.
„…We think she might be largely Chihuahua. However, considering the length of her fur, it’s plausible that she’s a mix of a hairless breed, terrier, or Maltese,“ professed May.
Regardless of her breed or origin, her family’s primary concern was her well-being. They cherished her immensely, desiring to make her the most joyful dog on earth.
Embracing the Good Life
Immersed in affection, the charming canine bounced back. Despite ongoing allergies, Blossom manages them effectively. This heart-winning pup takes a medicinal bath twice a week.
