Bailey is Katie Graham’s guardian angel. The therapy dog will do anything for his dog mom – even if it means being disobedient!
Katie suffers from a serious illness
Katie suffers from a disease called POTS. Sufferers of postural tachycardia syndrome tend to experience dizziness, increased heart rate and light-headedness when changing to an upright position.
Bailey can tell by Katie’s heartbeat when she is about to faint. She tells The Dodo:
„Bailey warns me of a fainting spell when my heart rate goes up. This gives me enough time to sit down and get into a safe position in case I lose consciousness.“
Bailey’s incredible help
But that’s not all Bailey does for his owner:
„Bailey then performs what’s called deep pressure therapy to lower my heart rate and increase blood flow. That helps to keep me awake.“
The clever four-legged friend can also fetch all the things he needs:
„He’s able to fetch medication, water, my phone, my blanket, snacks, really anything you ask him for. He just seems to know how to do it.“
However, Bailey also has his limits. Like all four-legged friends, he has been taught certain rules of behavior.
So Bailey is faced with a dilemma when Katie’s heart suddenly starts beating too fast while she is cleaning out the washing machine.
Bailey warns her and Katie sits down on the floor next to the washing machine with her back against the wall. But then there’s a problem.
Bailey in full action
While Katie remains as motionless as possible, Bailey is in full action and presses the cell phone into her hand.
But Bailey can’t reach Katie’s medication from downstairs, which is too far back on the counter. A place where the four-legged friend has no business being!
And Bailey knows this very well, as you can see from his hesitation. But he doesn’t think twice, because he knows that his mistress needs the medicine.
Intelligent disobedience
And so the kind-hearted rascal hops onto the counter without further ado and grabs the pillbox. A bottle of water from the fridge follows.
Then the heroic therapy dog focuses entirely on his two-legged friend and begins his helpful massage.
Katie says about her pet’s disobedience:
„What Bailey did was intelligent disobedience. That means he knows he’s not allowed to jump on the counter, but he knew he absolutely had to do it to keep me safe and sound.“
