Sakari is a beautiful Siberian Husky. When she is rescued from really bad circumstances by Amanda and Phil Killen, a completely new life begins for her.
A life that every dog could wish for. With lots of treats, cuddles and something that huskies especially love: snow!
Woe betide them when it gets cold outside
In this respect, Sakari is still a real husky. She loves romping through the snow with her owner Phil and snuggling up with him in a snow cave she built herself.
Unfortunately, even in New Brunswick in Canada there is not always enough snow, so Amanda and Phil have to come up with some ideas to keep Sakari occupied.
Because that’s what huskies need like the air they breathe: activity. This can be very, very long walks or fun and games. The main thing is action.
This is true at least in winter, when it’s cold outside. That’s when huskies really come to life. In summer, they tend to lie lazily in the corner.
Locked up with 40 other dogs
Occupation is even more important for Sakari than for her fellow dogs, as she was sold to a ruthless breeder as a puppy and lived in extremely cramped conditions.
She had to share a kennel with up to 40 other dogs. Unbearable for such an active husky.
Although huskies prefer to live in packs, there has to be enough space for the animals.
Fortunately, the animal welfare organization „Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals“ (SPCA) had already become aware of the conditions.
Shortly after the Killens had taken Sakari out of there, the other dogs were also rescued.
There is always something left behind
It is conditions like this breeder’s that sometimes make rescuing animals very difficult.
„Such dogs often suffer from behavioral problems or enormous separation anxiety,“
amanda Killen tells The Dodo.
It took a long time for Sakari to fully trust Phil and Amanda and really feel comfortable in her new home.
Even today, she prefers to stay in her basket behind the couch, close to her humans but away from too much hustle and bustle.
