Rudie is a little deer and his story is beautiful and horrific at the same time. It begins in a veterinary clinic.
Miranda, a veterinary nurse, works there. One day, a farmer comes through the door with Rudie in his arms.
Three legs
Poor Rudie is missing half a leg. He is rushed to the operating theater. His thigh has to be amputated, but the little deer survives.
When the question of what to do with the baby animal arises, Miranda’s answer is clear.
As soon as possible, she takes Rudie home with her. It’s a great home with sheep, horses, dogs, cats and alpacas.
A life among good friends
Life is difficult for Rudie at first. It takes a while for him to get used to walking on three legs.
Once he has overcome these initial difficulties, Rudie really blossoms.
He gets on brilliantly with all the animals and with Miranda and the other humans too, of course.
Everyone expects Rudie to enjoy a long and wonderful life with his friends.
The end
A happy time passes like a beautiful dream. Then one morning the sun rises. It is the last sunrise Rudie will ever see.
In the stillness of the dawning day, the pitiless gaze of cold eyes falls on him.
The eyes gaze at Rudie over a rifle. They belong to a strange man. He doesn’t see Rudie, who is enjoying the clear air and looking forward to the day.
He doesn’t see the brave Rudie who has overcome a difficult fate. Nor does he see the love of people and animals that has flowed into Rudie like sunlight.
He only sees flesh. A shot cracks. Rudie falls. The man throws him into his car and drives off. Rudie’s blood covers the grass.
Later, the man stands trial. He says:
„Not guilty.“
