Once left abandoned on the streets, Niko, an adorable 10-month-old mix of Cattle Dog/Rat Terrier, is now fostered in Saltillo, Mexico and is ready for adoption! Weighing approximately 22 lbs, Niko is a bundle of joy and energy. His unique personality encompasses traits like playfulness, loyalty, curiosity, and intelligence. This sweet-hearted pup awaits his forever home on the east coast.
Niko’s Rescue and Foster Journey
Rescued at an early age of just two months in May 2023, the story of Niko is a heartfelt tale of resilience and survival. His mother was saved from the icy clutches of the streets, and gave birth to a litter of nine the very next day. These pups spent the first six weeks of their life in a temporary home which threatened to return them to the harsh streets. Our vigilant animal rescue team intervened just in time. Five puppies found their forever homes, while Niko and two others were brought back to the shelter home. Even though Niko’s early life was mired in uncertainty, he integrated quickly and beautifully with other dogs and people at the shelter.
Niko is everything a pet lover would want – sweet, joyful, playful, energetic, and not overly clingy. With an athletic temperament, Niko thrives on mental and physical exercise. This clever pup is driven by the stimulus of the chase and loves to be a helping paw around the house. He is currently learning the use of the leash and is crate-trained.
Health Status and Vaccinations
Niko has crossed all the health checkpoints and is ready to be loved by his new family. His health records include a Spay/Neuter Certificate, 2 shots of DHPPI Vaccine, Rabies and Bordetella vaccines, and a Heartworm test negative certificate, among others. He has also been dewormed and is currently under monthly preventive protection for fleas, ticks, and heartworm provided by Nexgard Spectra.
Adopting Niko
Niko will be a perfect fit for families who are willing to engage in daily physical activities like walks or hiking. As he hails from an outdoor survival background, Niko has an innate protective instinct and requires a bit of training and patience. Preference will be given to homes with a fenced backyard and have had prior experience in dog behavior and training.
