For many visitors to the Detroit Zoo, a completely normal visit to the zoo turned into a total nightmare within a few seconds.
At first, they had been completely enthralled by two chimpanzees giggling together and chasing each other through their enclosure.
But then everything changed.
Play turns deadly serious
One of the chimpanzees slipped while hunting and fell into the moat surrounding the enclosure.
It was immediately clear to everyone that he was having huge problems staying afloat.
And yet the Detroit Zoo staff refused to help the monkey in mortal danger!
Rick, one of the visitors, told the Chicago Tribune his story from that day, which was also quoted by iheartdogs.com:
„It was one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever seen. This chimpanzee had his hands up in the air and his head sticking out of the water.
He was looking at the crowd of visitors like he was hoping one of us would save him.“
Rick noticed that no one was making any move to take action – so he did. He also told the Chicago Tribune what happened in the water.
Help from the outside
„The visitors showed me exactly where the monkey was. The water was so dirty that you couldn’t see a thing.
I swam back and forth along the bottom. And finally I found him.
He looked pretty lifeless, but I could see that he was still breathing. He was looking at me and I think he knew what was happening.
He never tried to attack me.“
Rick went on to say that after the rescue, he didn’t know what to do next. Should he do mouth-to-mouth?
Then he remembered that the monkey could then bite him. And just at that moment, he saw another monkey actually approaching him with bared teeth.
He decided to leave the enclosure as quickly as possible – but he had already done more than the zoo staff would ever have done.
He saved the monkey’s life.
