For some dogs, it seems to take ages before they finally find their family and their home with a happy ending.
That was the case for Petey from North Carolina. His stay at the shelter had to be extended again and again, even though the home was bursting at the seams.
A year is a long time
Although Petey was a real cheerful character, he was repeatedly overlooked during adoption visits.
The older he got, the less hope the staff at the North Carolina shelter had of finding him a good home.
Finally, they realized that they could no longer keep Petey. They asked their colleagues at the SPCA of Wake County if they would be willing to take Petey in.
Relocation and new friends
The SPCA shelter staff was surprised when Petey showed no shyness upon arrival, only joyful curiosity.
Samantha Ranlet, who organized the move, said he rushed into his new temporary home full of joy and excitement.
He showed his happy and friendly nature from the start and didn’t let his long time at the shelter spoil his good mood.
Successful posting
As soon as Petey moved into the new shelter, Samantha took a picture of him and posted it on her shelter page. She also shared his story.
No one gave in to the hope that Petey would quickly find a new family. After all, he had been overlooked so often.
But it wasn’t even a month before a family got in touch and asked to adopt Petey.
A big smile on his face
The formalities were quickly completed and Petey was finally able to move in with his new family, who wanted to keep him for the rest of his life.
Petey settled in quickly and loves to play and romp in the garden with his new family and his new dog brother.
Every evening, when he goes to his dog basket, tired and full, he falls asleep with a big doggy smile on his face.
The longest stay at the shelter has come to a happy end!
