A small dog lies trembling and abandoned next to a fence in Mexico. A woman walks past and stops. The sight is simply heartbreaking.
Especially because the dog has to fight for survival alone in a world she cannot see. Because the dog has no eyes.
Her post on social media called Mauricio Perez to the scene. And the frightened dog’s life changed completely.
A sad beginning
„Without hesitation, I went out to find her,“
perez reports after seeing the woman’s post.
„She was so thin and her bones were sticking out.“
Perez takes the dog, whom he names Concha, home with him. His girlfriend helps him bathe Concha and take her to the vet.
He reports:
„The vet said that she wasn’t born without eyes, but that something had happened to her – an injury or an untreated infection. I believe that her previous owner mistreated her, but we can’t know for sure.“
Concha will never regain her sight, but Perez is making it his mission to at least heal the wounds to her soul.
Concha regains confidence
This involves daily cuddles and a lot of patience. Perez’s efforts are successful. Step by step, Concha loses her mistrust, while her contentment and trust increase.
To prevent the dog from becoming disoriented at first and perhaps even running into furniture and injuring herself, Perez equips her with a „halo“.
The frame, which blind dogs can wear on their heads to enable them to walk around safely despite their lack of sight, will soon become superfluous.
„She knows where every door and every piece of furniture is. She knows where her food bowl and water bowl are. She is super-smart. If you didn’t know, you wouldn’t think she didn’t have eyes.“
says Perez proudly.
More importantly, Concha knows exactly where she can get her cuddles!
Concha has now been in Perez’s care for three years and is thriving.
„She is doing very well and is healthy and happy. She has changed our lives. And I’m so happy that we were able to change her life too,“
said Perez.
