This puppy is born pink and looks incredibly cute. He is rightly named Piglet, because with his pink fur and pink nose he looks like a piglet.
But as cute as the little puppy looks, he also has to contend with limitations that will affect his whole life.
The result of irresponsible breeding
Piglet is the „result“ of a breeder who simply ignored the potential health problems when mating.
The four-legged friend is a cross between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund – and his parents are both dapple.
When two dogs of this color mate, there is always a 25 percent risk that the puppies will be predominantly white, partially or completely blind and even deaf!
The reason for Piglet’s pink appearance is probably due to his pink skin, which shines through the white fur.
Unfortunately, Piglet is one of these puppies, as he was born completely blind and deaf..
Special needs
Piglet got his name because of his light pink coloring, reminiscent of a piglet.
He was such an adorable four-legged friend – but due to his blindness and deafness, he needed people who could respond to his needs and give him an extra dose of care and affection.
Piglet was discovered along with 37 other puppies in an animal hoarding household in Georgia, where there was no way he could stay!
That’s why animal rescuers brought him to Connecticut, where he met veterinarian Melissa Shapiro.
It was clear that he belonged to her
At first, the vet only wanted to take in the four-legged friend as a foster dog – but she quickly realized that Piglet was something very special.
She fell in love with him and after just two months, the decision was made: Piglet would stay and find a forever home with her!
Melissa was already the proud owner of six dogs – so she was all the more delighted about the new addition to the family.
Piglet quickly settled into his new home and enjoyed the love and affection he received from his owner.
Like a full-time job..
The vet loved Piglet dearly – but in the beginning, caring for him was like a full-time job, as she had to look after the puppy around the clock.
Piglet screamed loudly when he was anxious, which unfortunately happened all too often.
As soon as Melissa left the house, the four-legged friend suffered from severe separation anxiety, which is why she could never leave him alone at first.
But after a few months, Piglet slowly settled in and felt more and more comfortable every day.
His separation anxiety diminished because he knew he could rely on his owner.
Happy dog life despite impairment
Piglet has now fully arrived in his new home!
He loves playing and romping around with his brothers.
The walks are also a real pleasure for the four-legged friend every time – he even goes on business trips with his owner.
Although Piglet is blind and deaf, he doesn’t let this take away his zest for life and enjoys his dog life to the full.
His story is simply heart-warming – as a third-grade teacher in Plainville (Massachusetts) also saw it when she heard about Piglet.
The children had to hear about him
One day in class, the teacher told her children about Piglet and his positive outlook on life, which he always maintained despite his limitations.
She explained to the children that with the right attitude, you can simply overcome any obstacle in life – no matter how difficult it may be at the moment.
This taught the children that it is not a bad thing if a person is different, but that everyone is good just the way they are – Piglet made sure that they accepted and even celebrated differences!
The four-legged friend also helped the children to always remember that there is a way out. From then on, the first thing they always asked themselves in seemingly hopeless situations was: „What would Piglet do?“
What a wonderful inspiration
Piglet is a great role model and inspiration for both people and dogs.
With his cheerful nature, he encourages people to give dogs a chance even if they don’t look perfect at first glance.
Despite his difficult early days, Piglet is now a happy dog and a symbol of friendship and acceptance for many people.
