Policewoman Tiffany Miller is patrolling the grounds of Kutztown University in Pennsylvania one day. It’s a routine patrol and everything is quiet.
Suddenly she notices something strange. At the top of a brick wall, Tiffany discovers what looks like a small brownish ball.
Woken up too early
Interested, Tiffany gets closer to see what it could be.
The policewoman quickly realises that the something is not a ball, but an animal – a bat.
It is actually far too early in the year for the small flying mammal, which should still be in hibernation.
But the poor animal woke up too early due to a few warm days.
Tiffany immediately contacted the Pennsylvania Bat Rescue organisation. They specialise in rescuing bats.
Rescued
A short time later, staff from the rescue organisation arrive and take the little bat with them.
Stephanie Stronsick, founder and director of Pennsylvania Bat Rescue, is very familiar with Kutztown University, as she was a student here herself.
What’s more, this is by no means the first time that the university has asked her organisation for help because a bat has made a mistake about the season when waking up from hibernation.
Mealworms are delicious
When the bat arrives at Pennsylvania Bat Rescue, it is underweight but otherwise healthy and not injured.
At first she doesn’t react at all to her new surroundings, but the next night she devours a delicious mealworm dinner with relish.
The bat also gets a name. She is now called Goldie.
Waiting for April
Stephanie Stronsick is not surprised that Goldie has too little meat on her ribs. It’s almost to be expected with bats that wake up too early.
„Many bats that come into care are severely underweight and need emergency care,“
says Stephanie.
Goldie will spend a few weeks here, resting and certainly receiving plenty of delicious mealworms to keep her strong. She will then be released into the wild in April.
