A moored barge floats in the water near a power plant in Gallatin, Tennessee. It has loaded coal. Some of the employees passing by are amazed.
There is something else in the barge besides coal and this something is very much alive.
Delightful cargo with four ears
The unusual additional load consists of two small fawns. No one can explain how they got in there, but one thing is clear:
Now the two baby animals need help. It seems impossible for them to get out on their own.
Professional help needed
None of those present has any idea how to free the two involuntary barge visitors from their predicament.
So they do the only right thing and contact the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Here they find professional partners for their problem.
A short time later, several wildlife experts led by Eric Anderson arrive at the coal barge.
„I was immediately confident that we would find a way to get them off the barge,“
eric later recalls and continues:
„My mind went into problem-solving mode to overcome the unique challenge.“
Gently backed into a corner
The rescue turns out to be not that difficult. Together with other employees of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Eric climbs aboard.
Now the people carefully herd the two fawns into a corner.
From there, the fawns can be easily passed on to colleagues who are waiting outside the barge to receive them.
Reunion with mom
Everyone is delighted that the two fawns are doing well and have not been harmed by their little adventure in the coal barge.
Fortunately, there is no need to look for the fawns‘ mother. She has been standing at a distance for some time and has been following the rescue operation with a worried look on her face.
Now she can be reassured that everything turned out so well.
The two baby deer quickly run to their mother and then the family disappears into the forest with bouncing steps.
