It is a hot day in Brazil when a boy is walking home from school. His path leads him through dusty streets lined with dry earth and half withered grass.
He also has to walk past a building site – and it is there that his day suddenly changes dramatically.
A puppy cries for help – but where?
As the boy gets closer to the building site, he hears a wailing voice. He pricks up his ears and listens more closely.
His ears don’t deceive him – it really is the desperate cries of a small puppy.
The boy looks around but sees nothing. All he hears is this heart-rending crying.
Worried, the boy lets his gaze wander. The wailing seems to be coming from somewhere on the building site.
He listens and follows the sound of the poor little puppy’s voice. Then he finds the puppy: It’s stuck in a hole in the ground!
The puppy is understandably very excited and is panting like crazy. Not only is he in this scary situation, but he must also be overheated and incredibly thirsty.
Big sister has to help
The boy doesn’t know what to do now. All he knows is that he can’t leave the puppy to his fate.
Fortunately, he has a big sister, and he calls her now.
Karol, as his sister is called, has time and a big heart. She sets off immediately, carrying a large bottle of water.
When she arrives at her brother’s house and the hole with the helpless puppy, she starts by pouring water from the bottle into the puppy’s mouth.
The little one gratefully laps up the cool water. But how does he get out of the hole?
Karol talks to the puppy reassuringly and strokes him gently on the head. But she also knows that a frightened dog can easily bite, so she is very careful.
She hesitantly tries to grab him a few times to pull him up, but she doesn’t really dare.
Then she takes heart. Determined, she lifts him up with both hands and pulls him out of the hole.
Exhausted, but safe and sound
Once on the ground, the puppy lies down exhausted and continues to pant. Karol pours the rest of the water from the bottle over him to cool him down.
Then the siblings carry the exhausted puppy home and offer him food, but the little one won’t eat.
He is probably too dehydrated, he just wants to drink and cool down. He is still panting heavily.
To make sure he is not sick or seriously injured from falling into the hole, the siblings take the puppy to the vet.
The vet determines that the puppy needs to recover from his shock and the heat, but is otherwise healthy.
Until now, Karol and her brother believed the little dog was a stray. But it soon turns out that he has a home where he is already missing.
The puppy’s name is Doguinho and he is now back with his family. Karol stays in contact with the owners and helps take care of Doguinho so that he is soon fully fit again.
