It’s hard to believe that a dog’s fur is so matted and dirty that you can’t tell where the front and back are.
But that’s exactly what animal rescuer Donna Lochmann from the Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) organization experienced.
In the middle of a terrible snowstorm, she discovers a gray something under a van. What she then discovers leaves her speechless.
Frozen to the ground
Donna Lochmann is out and about in St. Louis on this winter’s day, looking for animals that need help.
It’s not long before she discovers a ball of fur under a van, moving very weakly.

She is certain that it is an animal. Donna doesn’t hesitate for long and crawls under the van.
And she was not mistaken. In front of her is a dog, incredibly matted and wet. In the freezing temperatures, parts of the fur are already frozen to the ground.

An examination is not possible
With great difficulty, the animal rescuer manages to get the dog out from under the van and into her warm car. She immediately takes the four-legged friend to the clinic.

But the doctors can’t help the poor guy. They can’t get through the thick clumps of fur to examine his body.
The fur has to come off, and immediately.
„It’s really difficult to remove the fur when it’s so tightly knotted,“
reports Donna Lochmann.
In the end, the animal rescuers have to shave off around three kilos of fur from the dog. It’s easy to imagine how heavy these three kilos were for the dog.

On the road to happiness
The doctors are finally able to examine the young dog. They find a broken pelvis. Pilgrim, as they call him, is operated on and recovers quickly.

A suitable family is also quickly found. They first take Pilgrim into care and then adopt him forever.

„Pilgrim is a perfect fit for our family, so we decided to fail as a foster home,“
pilgrim’s new owners reveal on their social media page.

The animal rescuers at SRSL may be losing a foster home, but Oscar – as Pilgrim is now called – is doing well. And that’s what counts.
