A stray dog named Sonny once lived in the small town of Jackson, Michigan.
His coat was shaggy, his ears cropped and his body marked by neglect. But behind his unkempt appearance was a lovable, cuddly creature.
He just needed to be teased awake with the right means.
A dog at the end of his tether
Fate was kind to Sonny when he was taken in by the Jackson County Animal Shelter (JCAS) in March 2023. The shelter staff quickly realized that Sonny was physically and mentally at the end of his rope.
Lydia Sattler, the shelter’s director, said Sonny appeared broken.
„He looked like he wanted to give up,„
she told The Dodo.
But Sonny did not give up. On the contrary: despite all the adversity and a heartworm infection, he proved that he had a fighter’s heart.
Day after day, the loving carers at the JCAS made progress in the little stray’s recovery. With every hug and every loving stroke, Sonny slowly but surely regained his zest for life.
There is so much love in this little four-legged friend
Sonny became the shelter’s mascot, always ready to share his warmth and love with anyone who approached him.
Lydia Sattler reports that Sonny loves to snuggle up to people and hug them as if to show them how grateful he is for being rescued.
„He literally wants to hug everyone,“
she enthused.
Days passed and Sonny was still waiting to be adopted by a loving family. Unfortunately, many people were put off by his appearance.
But the JCAS team knew it was only a matter of time before someone recognized Sonny’s true nature.
Hope for a new forever home
Lydia Sattler dreamed that one day Sonny would find a home with someone as gentle and loving as him.
To help Sonny find a new family, a kind donor has already covered the adoption fee and the shelter has promised to cover the cost of heartworm treatment once Sonny has found a new home.
Until then, Lydia and her team are enjoying every moment with Sonny and his heart-warming hugs. They have cared for many dogs over the years, but Sonny was very special.
His kindness and unwavering will to give and receive love despite his difficult past was simply incredible.
