When Amanda Hood spotted a plastic box right outside her workplace at the animal shelter, she didn’t think the worst at first.
As an employee of the Calhoun County Humane Society, she is used to people anonymously dropping off donations in boxes or bags outside the shelter.
The plastic box
When she suddenly saw something moving in the clear plastic box, her alarm bells started ringing. She immediately made her way to the shelter gate.
Not a donation
On closer inspection, she could see that two holes had been drilled in the lid of the box.
She carefully removed the lid and suddenly looked into many small, helpless faces. They were eleven puppies, just a few weeks old, crowded together in the box.

Happy rescue
She took the box and brought it to the Humane Society shelter. She didn’t know where the box came from, nor could she explain how it ended up in the front yard.
The box had probably not been there for more than an hour. Otherwise, with just two air holes in the lid, the eleven puppies would probably not have survived.
Amanda had the puppies thoroughly examined and it turned out that they were around five weeks old and fortunately showed no signs of disease or other problems.
Once taken out of the box, the puppies were immediately trusting and began to drink, eat and play.
Fortunately, the short stay in the box had not caused any damage.
Animal shelter overcrowded
Although the cute puppies enjoyed being held by the Humane Society staff, it soon became clear that they could not stay there. The shelter was completely overcrowded.
Fortunately, they quickly found a place in another shelter.
