Can a large Rottweiler and a small Dachshund have children together? It doesn’t seem possible at first, but there is actually a Rottweiler-Dachshund mix.
Among connoisseurs, this hybrid dog is called the „Dachsweiler“ (sometimes also „Dacksweiler“ or „Dackweiler“).
In contrast to other designer dogs, however, the Dachsweiler is a very young breed and there are hardly any kennels that specialize in it.
This makes the Dachsweiler a truly rare dog.
External appearance of the Dachsweiler
When two different dog breeds mate, the puppies can have very different outcomes.
Rottweilers grow up to 69 centimetres tall and weigh 60 kilograms, while dachshunds only measure up to 27 centimetres and weigh a maximum of nine kilograms.
The size and weight of the Dachsweiler depends on which genes come through more in the individual puppies.
They can be between 30 and 61 centimetres tall and weigh between 13 and 45 kilograms.
The physique of the parents also differs greatly.
The Rottweiler is long-legged, very muscular and has a chunky head, while the Dachshund has short legs, a long, rather slender body and a long muzzle.
It is almost impossible to predict what the Dachsweiler’s physique will look like. All conceivable mixtures of Rottweiler and Dachshund characteristics can occur.
However, they do have two things in common: floppy ears and a deep chest.
If the Rottweiler is mated with a short-haired dachshund, there are also similarities in the coat: It is short, close-fitting and easy to groom.
The colors are manageable, mostly the Dachsweiler has black fur with light chest patches and socks. However, pure black, brown or red are also possible.
It is unusual to cross a Rottweiler with a long-haired or rough-haired dachshund. If it does happen, this can have a corresponding effect on the coat texture.
Character of the Dachsweiler
Rottweilers have to live with serious prejudices and are even classified as list dogs in some federal states. They are considered aggressive and dominant. However, if trained correctly, they have a friendly, loyal nature.
Dachshunds, on the other hand, are known for their barking, hunting instinct and irritability. Here too, the right training is the key to encouraging the friendly family dog nature that lies within.
The Dachsweiler is therefore a loyal, kind-hearted companion that requires consistent but loving training from the outset.
It is also important that he gets enough physical and mental exercise. Both parent breeds are working dogs that are used to being active and using their brains.
A lack of exercise can lead to problematic behavior.
