A walk in the forest is supposed to be something beautiful and relaxing.
But as Ella, a woman in her 70s, wanders through the picturesque Norwegian countryside that day, a gunshot suddenly cuts through the idyllic sounds of nature.
The shock of the shot is followed by a much greater shock: the victim of the shot is lying right in front of Ella.
Bleeding, helpless – and very tall
Ella can’t believe it. A deer lies in the middle of the path right next to her. It is bleeding profusely from its gunshot wound, but it is still alive.
Now Ella is not a particularly strong woman and she is not very young either. There is no help nearby, only the hunter, but Ella certainly can’t and won’t ask him for help.
For most people in a situation like this, the obvious thing to do would be to feel sad and compassionate, but to move on because the animal is too big and heavy to be brought to safety.
But not Ella.
Strong commitment
The sprightly pensioner doesn’t even think twice. She shoulders the deer, despite its weight, and takes it home with her.
There she places it on the veranda, treats its wound with disinfectant and puts a bandage on it.
Then she brings him food, water and a cozy blanket.
There is nothing more she can do now except hope.
And indeed, the next day the deer is a little better. He has eaten the food and drunk the water.
Ella continues to look after him, changes his bandage and lets him stay in the garden.
Amazingly, the animal understands that this woman wants to help him and trusts her completely.
Friendship across all borders
Thanks to Ella’s loving care, the deer recovers more and more every day. Soon he is able to walk around and looks visibly stronger.
The young stag is even growing and his antlers are growing too.
His need for exercise is also growing and he stays away for a few days at a time.
But although he returns to the wild, he does not forget his rescuer.
A very special friendship has developed between Ella and the deer. They have a unique bond that is just as trusting even after many years.
The deer comes back to her friend every few days to cuddle her.
Sometimes he startles the now 81-year-old woman with his visits, because he doesn’t ring the doorbell, he knocks.
And he knocks on her bedroom window on the second floor with his antlers!
The imposing animal stretches up the wall to do so.
When Ella then opens the window, the big stag lets herself be stroked like a little dog and it’s clear that this special friendship will last forever.
