The jumping spaniel Spike is the absolute favourite of his family. This is also reflected in the fact that they develop a routine.
Each family member spends a night next to the cute four-legged friend. The reason for this, moves to tears!
The Morrisons rescue Spike
Spike was five when the Morris family rescued him from his old life. The plan was for Spike to sleep in his basket in the lower part of the house.
They had even organised a stair gate. Nice thinking, but his humans‘ plan didn’t suit Spike at all.
The family’s daughter, Catherine Morris, toldThe Dodo:
„On his first night with us, we closed the stair gate and went to bed. Spike whined for a few minutes, then jumped over the railing in the dark, trotted into my parents‘ room and climbed onto the bed! And he slept there from then on.“
Spike has a difficult past
Spike had been through a lot in his five years as a dog before he was adopted by the Morrises.
They didn’t have the heart to deny him his nightly cuddles. The daughter reported:
„He loves to cuddle and tries to get under the duvet to be as close as possible.“
Spike is now 14 years old and a regular guest in his humans‘ bed. But with age comes illness.
Spike is getting old and ill
Spike has had two strokes and can no longer manage to climb the stairs to the bedroom. The Morris family don’t know how much longer they have left with their pet.
So they quickly decide to take turns spending the nights on the sofa with their beloved four-legged friend. Catherine explains:
„This new sleep schedule started when I was still at university. My parents took it in turns to spend the nights downstairs with Spike.“
And further:
„Since I’ve been living at home again, I’ve joined the rotation, so all in all we’re getting a bit more sleep for the three of us.“
