On the island of Guam in the west of the Pacific, a dog wanders aimlessly.
She is terribly emaciated and couldn’t eat anything even if she found something. Her head is stuck in a plastic bucket – a very bad situation!
The Boonie Flight Project
In this state, a woman named Stephanie discovers the poor furry friend and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Not only that, Stephanie immediately decides to help the dog.

As an employee of the Boonie Flight Project, she is particularly well suited to this task.
The Boonie Flight Project is dedicated to rescuing stray dogs and placing them with families outside of Guam.
There are over 60,000 of these strays on the island, which, with an area of 545 square kilometers, is significantly smaller than Berlin or Hamburg.
Away with the hideous bucket

Fortunately, Stephanie and some volunteers quickly manage to catch the dog.
The hideous plastic bucket also comes off her head without any major problems. Now the emaciated animal can finally eat and drink.

Apart from her terrible nutritional condition, the vet gives her a good health certificate.

Gaining trust
At first, the dog, who is now called Winnie, is terrified and avoids both her rescuer Stephanie and other people.
However, Winnie soon realizes that she is now in the care of people who mean well by her.
When she notices the loving way people treat other dogs, she soon thinks: I want that too.
The move
Winnie spends about two and a half months in Stephanie’s care. Then she is in for another shock, albeit a positive one.
Winnie has to leave Stephanie and the helpers of the Boonie Flight Project and joins a new family.

„She was very, very scared“,
mary, her new human mom, describes the fur-nosed newcomer.

Part of the pack
It takes a while for Winnie to gain Mary’s trust. It’s mainly thanks to Maple that she settles in wonderfully.

Maple is one of several dogs who already live with Mary, and she looks after Winnie like a big sister.

„She’s definitely part of the pack now,“
mary says of the Winnie of today.
„She’s come so far.“
